Hull City of Culture Upcoming Events

Every four years, one of the UK’s cities is chosen as the nation’s City of Culture. This year, Hull was selected, and there are plenty of upcoming events for visitors to enjoy. Here are just a few upcoming events we’re particularly looking forward to.

Richard III

One of Shakespeare’s most provocative works comes to the Hull Truck Theatre from May 5th to 27th, with shows at 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm.  Set in the midst of the War of the Roses, the play portrays the growing death toll inflicted by one of Shakespeare’s most twisted villains. The production marks 25 years of Northern Broadsides, which has been performing classical plays across the country throughout those years. Richard III brings them back to their roots – it was the very first play they performed at the Marina Boatshed.

Ticket prices will range between £2 and £22.50. Access performances include:

  • Audio Described: May 18th at 7.30pm
  • Accessible Performance: May 20th at 2.00pm
  • Captioned Performance: May 24th at 7.30pm

The Train Track and the Basket by Claire Barber

If your tastes run to the modern rather than the Elizabethan, make sure you pay a visit to the Hull Paragon Interchange anytime between April 7th and June 29th to view Claire Barber’s fantastic new installation. Drawing on her own experiences travelling through countries as diverse as New Zealand and Outer Mongolia, the work is inspired by the mass movement of more than two million people who arrived into Hull by ship from Europe between 1848 and 1914 before heading to the New World. Part of the Look Up programme, the installation performs a social narrative of this significant transmigration.

The installation will be open to the public for free, with a BSL Interpreted talk scheduled for May 23rd – tickets will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Masterpieces in Focus from the Royal Collection: Rembrandt

Rembrandt is a name that is known throughout the world as one of the greatest and most influential artists to ever put brush to canvas. From April 1st through to August 28th, the Ferens Art Gallery will be home to a noted Rembrandt painting – the first time a piece of the artist’s work has ever been shown in Hull. One of five loans agreed for the Ferens between 2017 and 2021, The Ship Builder and his Wife will be displayed in partnership with the Royal Collection Trust.

Tickets are free, and the Ferens Gallery is open every day of the week.
