Remembrance Day in Hull

You may have seen in the news this morning about the Tower of London Poppies: the breath-taking exhibition has had calls to be extended after and overwhelming public demand including one from the Mayor of London. Boris Johnson called Royal palace chiefs to beg for it to run for an extra week or two.

If you have not seen the display, the heart-rendering exhibitions shows a field of bright red ceramic poppies surrounding the Tower of London that has drawn in overwhelming crowds.

In honour of this years Remembrance Day and the Tower of London Poppies, we have compiled a list of remembrance day services, parades and events in Hull this November.

  • Time to remember: Giant poppy sculptures at Hull’s Ferens gallery and Holy Trinity Church, until Sunday 23rd Nov
  • Much like London’s field of artistic poppies, Hull has it’s own Remembrance installation at the Feren’s Art Gallery. The display shows thousands of handmade poppies, carefully created by schools, community groups, and museum visitors and will form part of two Remembrance Day art installations in Hull, along with an installation at the Holy Trinity Parish Church which will be displayed from this Saturday until Friday 28th November.

Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance, Hull City Hall, Friday 7th Nov

With performances from the EYMS Band, the 150 Regiment RLC band, FLucy Marshall, LCpl Alex Shakespeare, HSY ACF Black Light Display Team, TS Iron Duke Sea Cadet Corps, Haltemprice Junior Rock Choir, Do-Re-Mi Singers, Lesley Julian and a ‘Last Night of the Proms’ Finale, this will certainly be a touching event. Tickets are £12 with concessions. 7.30pm, Hull City Hall.

Remembrance Weekend at the Museum Quarter, Sat 8th, Sun 9th Nov

The Streetlife Museum in Hull is no stranger to Remembrance events and this years will be no exception; military vehicles, re-enactments, live music and children’s activities and a charity raffle will all be taking place in the realistic street setting in the Museum Quarter of High Street. There will also be a full-sized replica First World War tank. This free event will take place Saturday 10am – 4pm and Sunday 12-4pm.

Remembrance Day Parade, Sunday 9th Nov

The main Remembrance Parade will take place at the Cenotaph on Ferensway at 10.55am. Anyone who wishes to take part in the parade to the Cenotaph will meet at Pease Street on Anlaby Road at 9.55am ready to step off at 10.25am. The marching contingent will arrive at the Cenotaph on Ferensway at 10.30am. The civic party will leave the Royal Hotel at 10.45am before the service starts at 10.55am. Wreaths will be laid at 11.02am. The contingent will then march past at 11.25am. Ferensway will be closed for the duration of the parade and members of the public can gather in viewing areas around the Cenotaph.

The Paragon Station will also hold a service of dedication at 11.30 am to unveil new wooden panelslisting the names of more than 2,000 men from Hull lost in World War One. All are welcome to the event.
